Add-on and Re-buy Casino Tournaments Explained

Tournaments come in different forms, and some allow for a person to employ different strategies. Words like Add-on and Re-buy can also be seen in a card tournament. If you are going to participate, it will be good to know what those things mean.

Tournaments do have different rules, and each and every one of these rules must be set well before the start of the tournament. The tournament usually has a fee which players who want to participate must pay. This fee is called the “Buy In”. The Buy in is the initial chips that you get at the start of a game. The chips are the representation of the money you have used to enter the tournament.

Depending on the size of the tournament, there have been buy ins of over ten thousand dollars. Official tournaments held by casinos in Las Vegas usually have buy ins that are about one thousand dollars. There are tournaments that allow for Add-ons and Re-Buys, however, there are tournaments that do not allow such things. Usually these are the tournaments on the professional level, where once you are out, you are out for good.

Add-on

To add-on is to pay extra for extra chips on top of the sum of ships that you already have. This is an interesting option as some tournaments allow for several add-ons during a game. A large amount of tournaments allow just a small amount to be added to the current stack. This is to prevent the giving an unfair advantage to any certain player. A lot of tournaments do not allow this, but there are plenty out there who do not condone the use of add-ons during the game.

Re-buy

A re-buy is when a player can re-buy their way into the game once they have lost all of their chips. In a usual tournament, a player loses completely when all of their chips are gone. However, some tournaments will disqualify a player once their chips have reached a certain low amount. Then, they can re-buy their way back into the game. The amount of the re-buy is usually the amount that was paid to enter into the tournament.

Once they have re-bought, they receive the exact same number of chips that they did at the start of the game. This can be done either up to three times, or an unlimited amount of times, depending on the tournament.
